NILA Update

National Independent Living Association

This e-update is dedicated to NILA’s relief

efforts for those in need from hurricane Katrina.

The Board of Directors and staff for the National Independent Living Association would like to extend its thoughts and prayers for those who have been affected by Katrina.  There are numerous agencies who are dedicated to the immediate needs of people in the area and evacuees.  NILA is going to be here for the weeks and months ahead.

The National Independent Living Association is dedicated to helping those who have been in care and foster families find the assistance they need to rebuild their lives.  As a member agency of NILA, if you or your staff would like to assist us in being advocates for them, please e-mail me at salevy@nilausa.org.  We will provide you with the information you need to make sure these youth do not become a new “lost generation”.

Together we can link youth and foster families with the critical services they need.

Already helping with the effort or want to get involved?

The members of NILA are experts in independent living and have numerous services and supports to offer.  Please let us know what services and supports you are currently able to provide victims of Katrina.  We are compiling a list and getting this information to state and agency administrators who can refer youth and foster families directly to your agency.  We’re looking for:

ü  Housing opportunities – especially for youth

ü  Advocates (helping link youth and families to services; see above)

ü  Clothing

ü  Counseling

ü  Money

ü  Household items

ü  Toiletries

ü  …anything anyone would need whose lost virtually everything and who doesn’t have family support

What information do you need that you don’t currently have in order to provide help?  Is there information that NILA can provide for you that would make helping easier?

Let us know at salevy@nilausa.org

What’s this equation?

phone cards + a phone = a happy person

WE NEED YOU!!!  Coming to Growing Pains?  Bring a national phone card with you and drop it at the NILA display or at the registration booth.  We will make sure they get to youth who need them.  Not coming to the conference?  Mail them to:

NILA, 4203 Southpoint Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32216

Can you imagine not being connected?

NILA HURRICANE KATRINA RELIEF CONTRIBUTIONS

At Growing Pains, NILA will kick off its relief efforts with a 50/50 raffle.  Bring those dollar bills and look for opportunities to purchase raffle tickets.  Individual and agency contributions are also welcome.

All proceeds from the fund will go directly to NILA member agencies affected by the hurricane.  We want to help our NILA family members re-establish their programs and services for youth.

If you have any information concerning any of these NILA member agencies, please let me know.  We want to assist them in “getting back on their feet”:
